Voice can help us induce relaxation

Voice can help us induce relaxation

“All voices are good, but only a few people know exactly what to do with their voice.” – Carmen Ivanov

When we speak, we can convey various states based on our words, rhythm and tonality. For example, to convey peacefulness, we should use words that are suggestive of this state, speaking in low tonality and with a slowed-down rhythm. This is how priests and mindfulness instructors usually speak. If, on the other hand, we want to mobilize people to act as one, we should speak using a dynamic rhythm and a medium tonality, as army and police officers speak.

Not all people have the ability to induce other people states, but it can nonetheless be trained through voice projection techniques. With these, we can adopt a specific sound of the voice based on what state we want to convey. Such a technique, termed ‘speaking towards the back’ is used by some mindfulness instructors. It gives the voice a kind of echo which helps inducing relaxation. What we do is focusing our attention on the back of the head while speaking, using a lowkey tone. If we are not able to focus our attention to the back of the head, we can imagine there is somebody behind us, to whom we want to talk but we cannot face them. Successfulness of this technique is signaled by the occurrence of fine vibrations in the back head and neck area. Some yoga practitioners correlate these vibes with the activation of the Vishhuda chakra – an energetic focal point which helps enhancing vocal qualities. The technique is accessible to most people and does not have any side effects, and its efficiency depends on the duration of the time in which it is employed. We invite you to experience it and write about your results to us.
